TSJ Smile Group was founded in 1996 by Dr Sarfraz Khan known to everyone simply as Saf.
Saf graduated from Turner Dental Hospital in the great city of Manchester before returning to South Yorkshire to begin his Foundation Dental year. He was placed at Garden Street Dental Practice in Darfield under the guidance of Howard Crossley, where he began his professional journey.
After completing his Foundation year, Saf continued at Garden Street Dental Practice as an associate, later becoming a partner. With encouragement and support from Mrs Linda Platts, he went on to establish Darfield Dental Practice, the first of what would soon become a growing group.
In quick succession, Saf expanded further, acquiring Dearne Valley Dental Practice in Goldthorpe and Worsbrough Dental Practice in Worsbrough Dale. Each new practice reflected his personal vision and benefited from the dedication of exceptional local staff who shared his passion for patient care.
Over the following years the group flourished the number of registred patient’s increased. After much deliberation, NHS England awarded TSJ Smile Group the dental contract for Grimethorpe, leading to the establishment of Grimethorpe & Shafton Dental Practice. Darton Dental Practice and Royston Dental Practice soon followed, strengthening the group’s presence across the region.
Beyond building dental practices, Saf gave back to dentistry in many other ways. He contributed to the Yorkshire & Humberside Foundation Dental Programme for more than a decade, was an active member of the Barnsley LDC, and led the NVQ Level 3 Dental Nursing programme in Barnsley for many years.
His commitment to professional growth continued throughout his career. Saf completed a two-year Diploma in Cosmetic Dentistry at University College London, alongside a Diploma in Prosthodontics broadening his expertise to better serve patients.
Saf achieved what he always envisioned: to be part of a dental team dedicated to helping others every day. In 2014, he stepped back from clinical dentistry for personal reasons, leaving behind a legacy of care, growth, and community.
